Beyond the Commodity: 4 Salesforce Use Cases for Energy & Utilities

Energy companies are no longer managing just commodity contracts. Their business now spans customers, products, assets, and service across a fragmented enterprise landscape. Salesforce can connect that customer-facing layer across B2B and B2C, while billing, ERP and other core systems stay in place.

Where Salesforce creates value for energy companies

Four areas stand out: complex offer configuration, customer retention, new non-commodity services and integration with the operational core.

Use case 1: Price complex energy offers in one flow

Selling energy is not a simple product selection. The final price of electricity or gas can depend on numerous parameters, and the complexity grows further when commodity and non-commodity products are combined. B2B adds multi-site quotations, different contract structures, and more complex account relationships.

Salesforce can bring product configuration, pricing, quoting, order management and contracts into one commercial flow. The same environment can support both B2C and B2B, including combinations of energy products and additional services.

Energy companies have traditionally needed specialized systems to handle complex electricity and gas pricing. Salesforce can now cover this capability within the platform, including the configuration of commodity and non-commodity offers.

Use case 2: Act before the customer contract expires

Customer contract expires next month. The opportunity to retain that customer is obvious, but only if the right teams can see it in time.

In energy, the information needed to act can be spread across billing, CRM, service, and other systems. Salesforce can bring that context into a shared customer profile, giving sales, marketing and the contact centre the same view of the relationship.

From there, marketing automation can trigger a retention campaign, follow-up or relevant offer based on contract status and customer history, instead of relying on disconnected lists or manual handovers.

In energy, creating a complete customer profile can mean bringing information together from many different systems. The value is being able to act on that context, for example when a contract is about to expire, instead of finding out too late.

Use case 3: Connect the sale to installation and field service

Selling a solar installation, wallbox or EV charger creates a much longer customer journey than the initial sale. The product has to be installed, maintained, and, when something goes wrong, serviced or replaced.

Salesforce Field Service can connect that operational lifecycle to the customer's record. Dispatchers can assign jobs based on location, availability and technician skills, while field teams can access and update customer, asset and service information directly during the visit.

Technicians can also receive relevant instructions and guidance in the field, helping them identify the right procedure, expertise, or parts needed for the job.

Once you sell a solar installation or a wallbox, the relationship becomes operational. You need to know what was sold, who installed it, how it is being serviced, and whether there have been any issues. All of that should become part of the same customer context.

For the energy company, that creates one continuous view from the original sale to every intervention that follows. The same model applies across utilities, where installations, connections, and field maintenance need to be coordinated at scale.

Use case 4: Keep the operational core. Connect Salesforce to it

Energy companies already rely on specialized systems for billing, ERP, pricing, asset management, and other core operations. Replacing them is rarely the point.

Salesforce creates value when it can use the right data from those systems inside customer-facing processes. Sales teams need current pricing and contract information. Customer care needs service and billing context. Field operations need customer, asset, and work-order data in one flow. That makes integration a core part of the solution, not a technical step at the end.

“Energy is a large enterprise environment. Salesforce is one part of that landscape, and it has to work with ERP, and the other systems running the company. That is where the ability to deliver the integration end to end becomes critical.” - Jaroslav Luc, Salesforce Delivery Director, Trask

For energy companies, the architecture question is therefore not where Salesforce replaces the core. It is where it should sit, what it should own, and how reliably data moves between the systems around it.

A quick reality check: Where is customer context breaking today?

Ask four questions:

  • Can sales configure a complex energy offer without switching between multiple tools?
  • Do marketing and sales know early enough when a customer contract is about to expire?
  • Can field teams see the full customer, asset, and service context during an intervention?
  • Does customer-facing Salesforce data flow reliably to and from billing, ERP and other core systems?

If the answer is “not consistently” to any of these, the problem is unlikely to be another missing feature. It is the connection between customer processes and the systems behind them.

Salesforce has to fit the wider energy landscape

The real question is not only what Salesforce can do. It is how well it fits into the systems and processes already running the business.

Trask combines Salesforce expertise with energy industry knowledge, integration, data and experience with complex enterprise environments. We look at the process end to end, define the right role for Salesforce, and connect it with the systems around it.

The customer sees one energy provider. The technology behind that relationship should work like one too.
